WASHINGTON, D.C.: U.S. President Donald Trump said on May 1 that he plans to raise tariffs on cars and trucks imported from the European Union to 25 percent, citing what he described as the bloc's failure to comply with a trade agreement.

In a social media post, Trump said the move would take effect next week. "Based on the fact that the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States," he wrote.

"It is fully understood and agreed that, if they produce Cars and Trucks in U.S.A. Plants, there will be NO TARIFF," Trump added.
